A Study of Measurement of the Fat Cotents in Korean Youths by Means of Skinfold Methods

Abstract
|
|
|
For the measurement on the fat content in University Students, an intensive examination was conducted on a total of 3,058 Students(male 2, 611, female 447),, from 16 to 25 years of age.
The subjects were all students who had passed the written entrance examination for Seoul National University.
Total body fat amount was measurement by skin-fold thickness with a. skin-fold caliper (manufactured by Cambridge Scientific Industrial Inc. U.S.A.). at four sites of the body, and it was calculated by Kim´s") and Kim´s"
regression equation.
As a result of this survey, the following conclusions were obtained;
1. Physical measurements:
i) The average of body height by anthropometrics was male 168.06±4.84cm and female 157.85±4.25cm.
ii) The average of body weight by anthropometrics was male 57.08+6.24kand female 49.95±4.79kg.
iii) The average of chest-girth by anthropometrics was male 85. 55±4.27cm and female 80.73±4. 14cm.
iv) The average of sitting-height by anthropometric was male 91.76±2.74cm. and female 85.78±2.90cm.
In all cases the male measurements were higher than female.
2. The mean skin-fold thickness measured with a large skin-fold caliper was.. At the sub-scapular: male 11.26±3.86mm and female 14.32±3.21mm,
Abdominal : male 9.86±3.47mm and female 13.37±3.74mm, Lumbar : male 12.97±4.76mm and female 19.41±2.34mm, Upper arm : male 6.24±2.97mm and female 12.20±2.97mm, Total average : male 10.08±3.76mm `and female 14.91±3.06mm,
in all cases the female measurements were higher than the male.
3. Data on body fat amounts according to body fat weight regression equation
were:
in male: Fat weight=10. 49kg,
Fat free weight=46.59kg,
Fat weight/total body mass (/) =18.37% (body fat amount Fat free weight/total body mass (9,,)z=81.63%, Fat weight/fat free weight (/)=22.51/.
in female: Fat weight=- 11.90kg, Fat free weight=38.05kg,
Fat weight/total body mass=23.82%. Fat free weight/total body mass=76.18%,
Fat weight/fat free weight=31.270, The females value was higher than the male.
